![]() Rewrite and Planetarian are both Key VNs, but they're really different from other Key VNs. If you want to invest in the time and effort to complete an entire VN, then imo Little Busters! would ultimately be more satisfying, but I would suggest reading both Clannad and Little Busters! if you can afford to do so. If you just want to check out how Key VNs are like, I would suggest simply trying a Clannad route (or a few) and decide whether they suit your tastes. The main route in Little Busters! is probably my #1 favorite VN route ever. Little Busters! is more inconsistent though, with some routes being quite disappointing, while others are really great. Of the two, Clannad is far longer (over ten routes!) but it does an excellent job of ensuring that every route is at least somewhat decent (while the better routes are just amazing). Both of them are high school slice of life VNs with romance sprinkled in on some routes. ![]() Clannad and Little Busters! are both much better than their anime counterparts imo, but they're also really long. The ones I'd really recommend are Clannad, Little Busters!, Rewrite, and Planetarian. If you like emotional stories that would make you cry, Key's VNs are very good. Of those three, I'd recommend True Remembrance, because Narcissu's atmosphere is too one-sidedly depressing (it's about the activities of terminal patients) while Planetarian doesn't have a sufficient cast of characters (there is only one character, besides the protagonist who isn't even shown or voiced). All three of them are relatively short and straightforward, and are easy to get into even if you never read a VN before. Good entry-level VNs are True Remembrance, Narcissu + Narcissu Side 2nd, and Planetarian. So, what VNs are you guys reading/plan to read/already read? VNDB is a visual novel database site where you can list down VNs like the way you can list anime and manga on MAL. If you want to know which VNs I've read, my VNDB List is here. My favorite VN, Umineko no Naku Koro ni, is also my favorite fictional story ever. Note that you will need to install a torrent client like utorrent or bittorrent in order to download the torrent files.Īnyway, as for me, I've read a few VNs and I really like the VN medium a lot. You can download the English version for free over here. It's quite short, so it shouldn't take more than a week to finish, and is a good demonstration of what a VN is like. If you haven't read any of the non-adventure-game type VNs that are mostly narration but are interesting in trying out the medium, a very good VN to start with is True Remembrance. Adventure games like the Ace Attorney series or 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors technically fall under the definition of a visual novel, so feel free to discuss them here. Examples of this are Fate/Stay Night, Clannad, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, etc. The majority of VNs are in Japanese and you'd have to resort to installing translation patches to read them in English. ![]()
